History

DrUsui The healing technique known in the West as Reiki was developed in Japan early in the last century by Mikao Usui (1895-1926). Usui Sensei established clinics in Tokyo and traveled all over Japan healing the sick and teaching his healing method. Article about Dr. Usui.
One of the teachers Usui Sensei trained was Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, a naval medical doctor. Hayashi also established a clinic in Tokyo and trained thirteen teachers prior to his passing in 1941. Article about Dr. Hayashi.

MrsTakata One of Hayashi’s students was Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Hawaiian of Japanese descent. In the late 1930’s, Takata introduced Reiki to the West. She taught and practiced in Hawaii for many years before bringing Reiki to the mainland in the early 1970’s. Before her passing in 1980, she had taught Reiki to countless men, women, and children the world over and had trained twenty-two teachers (Masters). All Western Reiki practitioners trace their lineage through Takata.
